A solar eclipse will occur in Nigeria on Thursday, September 1, between the hours of 7:15am and 10:03am with slight variations in actual timing across the country, the National Space Research and Development Agency (NSRDA) said.

A press statement by the Head of Media and Corporate Communications, Dr Felix Ale, appealed to the general public not to panic or attach any spiritual interpretations to this event. He said the eclipse cannot be observed with naked eyes, as this could cause damage.

Check out how these smart kids pulled out their friend from a pit

Below is what Itsede Okai, the witness who lives in Lagos (according to his Facebook bio) wrote:

"While taking a walk in one of the slump communities, I came across these kids playing football. I stood a little bit to watch them display their talents and suddenly, the football fell in a pit. One of them quickly jumped in and threw the ball out but started finding it difficult to come out because his hands could not reach the top of the pit. This is how the boys demonstrated their wisdom to pull their friend out. Never underestimate the wisdom of your kids, they got so much to offer our homes."

Hmm!! RRS nabs ex-convict for robbing foreigners

The operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command has arrested an ex-convict for allegedly robbing a Portuguese couple in traffic around Ijora, Lagos.
The suspect, Samuel Meme, 22, from Delta, an erstwhile scrap metal collector before venturing into robbery, stated that, he targeted and robbed cars whose occupants are busy using their phones while in traffic.

Meme was arrested on Saturday morning after robbing a Portuguese couple and occupant of another car in traffic at Marine Bridge, Ijora.
In his statement, the suspect said,

“my plan was to operate alone that night. Luckily for me there was heavy traffic, which extended deep into the night in Marine Bridge. Just as I was planning to strike, I ran into Wasiu (still at large), we decided to rob cars together.

"During the operation, we opted for a car at the rear, a Toyota SUV. The occupants were whites, and I guessed they were husband and wife. Wasiu and I positioned ourselves on both sides of the car and we broke the two rear glasses.

I collected the man’s phone while Wasiu took her wife’s phone and her purse containing N60, 000. The lady pleaded for her drug from the purse and I asked my colleague to give her and we left for another car".

The suspect further said that,

"the next car in front was a Toyota Corolla, with a lone occupant. We broke the two side glasses too but the lady insisted she had no phone but we collected her bag and jewellery".

Recounting how he joined the robbery gang, the suspect revealed,

" Wasiu taught me how to rob in traffic and I have mastered the act. I operate alone. Occasionally, when I run into like minds we robbed whenever there is traffic in Marine Bridge. We sleep under Ijora Bridge and we are many there".

The suspect disclosed that four of his gang members are currently serving different jail terms in Kirikiri prison.

"We are six guys in my gang. Four of us are in Kirikiri Prison. They are Gbenga, Imele, Tontolo and Lateef. I just came back from Kirikiri, where I spent 3 months.

Robbery is not the only job I do. I do other menial jobs. We selected cars to rob whenever we see any vehicle where the occupants are busy with phones. We start operation around 8:00 p.m.
The suspect further told the RRS interrogator that he is also an expert in removing trailers' batteries.

"I also remove and sell trucks batteries that are parked by the road side. This week alone, I have stolen and sold like five batteries. I sold each of the batteries for N4000 or N5000. I sell them to Musa Yahuu", he said.

His confessional statement led to the arrest of the stolen batteries' receiver, currently in police custody.
He added that,

"My colleagues who are still at large are Dan Jos, Ik and Wasiu. Dan Jos and Ik are part of my team, only that they didn’t operate with me that night”.

As at the time of filing this report, the traumatized Portuguese couples were still admitted in the hospital.

Confirming the incident, the Police PPRO, SP Dolapo Badmos, said that there would be no hiding place for criminals in Lagos State, adding that the suspects have been transferred to SARS for further investigations

Photos: At least 20 dead, dozens injured in Orlando gay nightclub shooting, U.S born Afghan named as suspect

A mass shooting which took place in a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, left about 20 people dead and at least 42 wounded early today Sunday June 12, police said, adding that a SWAT team killed the shooter. The gunman wielding an assault-type rifle and a handgun took hostages and opened fire inside Pulse Night Club, killing approximately 20 people and wounding 42 before dying in a gunfight with SWAT officers.

Police Chief John Mina also said the shooter had some sort of "suspicious device". He said the suspect exchanged gunfire with an officer working at the club around 2 a.m, then went inside and took hostages.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement Special Agent in Charge Danny Banks said during a news conference that the mass shooting is being investigated as an act of terrorism. He said the authorities are looking into whether this was an act of domestic or international terror, and if the shooter was a lone wolf.

Law enforcement sources told CBS News they have identified the suspect as Omar Mateen, a U.S. citizen from Port St. Lucie, Florida, who was born to Afghan parents in 1986.

"At this point, this is an incident, as I can see it, we can certainly classify as a domestic terror incident," Orange County Sheriff's Office spokesman Jerry Demings told CBS.

'Voice' star Christina Grimmie shot & killed during meet & greet with fans after performance

22 year old Christina Grimmie has been killed by a deranged fan. The former 'Voice' contestant was shot dead while doing a meet and greet with fans on Friday night June 10th following a concert in Orlando, Florida. According to eyewitnesses, the man walked up to Christina and opened fire at point blank range, killing her instantly. Her brother tackled the shooter, but the man was able to get free enough to shoot and kill himself. The photo on the right was taken minutes before she was killed...

Christina and her brother were performing with their band Before You Exit when the sad incident happened. Since finishing in third place on "The Voice" Season 6 (2014) ... Christina signed with Island Records, and was reportedly working on an album.

From TMZ

Police have identified Christina Grimmie's murderer as  Kevin James Loibl ... a 27-year-old man from St. Petersburg, FL.

Loibl drove from his home to Christina's concert Friday night in Orlando, and cops say he'd made plans to return to St. Pete after the show ... an indication he felt he could get away with the murder.

Police say they were searching Loibl's home ... no word yet on what they found there. Loibl fatally shot himself during a struggle with Christina's brother ... after he shot the singer.

Loibl's family released a statement on the front door of their St. Petersburg home.

Sources connected to the family tell TMZ so far police have not told them about any direct threat Loibl made either on social media or otherwise. It appears, however that police know that the murder was premeditated because they say he left his home intending to carry out the killing

Medical doctor turned armed robber arrested in Anambra state

45 year old Richard Macaulay Obafemi, a medical doctor who trained at the University College London, has been arrested for Armed robbery by the Anambra state police command.

According to The Sun, Richard had his primary and secondary school education at Ipaja, Lagos State before proceeding to the University College London, UCL, where he obtained a degree in Microbiology in 1987 and later studied medicine at University Colege London UCL, from 1987-1992.

In 1993, he did the housemanship in Hatsfield, London. In 1996, Obafemi who is an indigene of Ogun state, came to Nigeria for the National Youth Service Corps Scheme and was posted to Kwara State. At the end of the service year, Obafemi took up appointment with the College of Medicine, University of Benin, where he worked for two years from 1998 to 2000, before travelling to Saudi Arabia. He thereafter got another job offer at the University of Ghana in 2006 and worked there till 2015 when he decided to visit Nigeria.

“In 2015, I came to Nigeria and visited Kaduna State. During that trip, a car I was driving had an accident and the victim died. I was charged to court and remanded at Kaduna Central Prison. But I was later released from prison on April 8, 2016".

While in prison, Obafemi developed a relationship with two other inmates, Stephen and Ifeanyi who were professional car snatchers and armed robbers. When he left prison, he met with these men who had also regained freedom and they convinced him to join their business.

"After I left prison, I had followed Ifeanyi to Asaba and joined their gang, which specialized in snatching cars. We have stolen cars like Lexus, SUV in Lagos State, which I drove to Katsina State to sell to buyers from Niger Republic. I sold one for N450,000. I didn’t go back to University of Ghana because when I was in prison in Kaduna, I didn’t communicate with them. When I came out from prison, I found out that there was no going back. I decided to join the armed robbery gang to earn a living. I am married and blessed with three children. I lost my wife, Mary in 2012 while my three children are in Canada.”

Luck however ran out on them when the Anambra state police arrested an alleged member of their gang, Vincent, in Onitsha who revealed information to the police. Investigations by the police led to the arrest of Obafemi on May 17th at a hotel in Anambra.

The police will charge him and his accomplices to court soon.
